The role of mentorship to help students make early and right career decisions can’t be overemphasized.
According to research by Finder.com, “A total of 53.2 million former students say they’re unsure about the value of their degree, part of 39.4% of the 135 million Americans who’ve completed higher education. It’s little wonder that such a high percentage of those with degrees think their college wasn’t worth the money, given the 28.2% (14.5 million) of them who are unable to find a job within their field of study.”
While a university degree is very important, if the right mentorship and career orientation were given, these folks would have made the right career decisions on time that they will be happy with and wouldn’t spend extra effort to learn an additional skill to land a job after their degrees.
One of my co-founders, Igor Trofimov our CTO at Bukable, studied a law-related degree for 4 years, and now he’s a self-taught software engineer who later went on to study for another degree in a computer science-related field back his career in software engineering.
There are millions of other people in Africa, Europe, Asia etc who are currently working in roles that are not in line with the degrees they originally studied during their university years. What a waste of time and effort!
At Bukable, we want students to make the right career decisions on time via access to mentorship, which will help them find their passion on time, study a degree in line with their career interests and go on several internships to gain experience.
The universities can not do the work of grooming the talent needed for the job market alone!
That is why Bukable is building a community that will provide students access to mentorship as well as opportunities like paid internships to gain experience and access to companies offering deals and discounts on products and services.
